Can CHESS Be Pluralized?

Well no, if you are strictly talking about our favorite board game. The word chess is classified as an uncountable noun, which means the single and plural versions of the word are the same.

However …

… the lesser known definition of the CHESS is “an annual weed native to Europe”. And that can be pluralized (i.e., CHESSES).

It’s a word well-known to Scrabble players and the like.

So now you know.
